Hi MSEE experts,I have looked at and clicked through two different webpages that say they are for downloading Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 movie editing and video capture software in afree version, but when I download from this page.the installer that downloads then says it is trial software when you start to install it. Not free version software. And if I click through from this page, below, that says 'Download Free Edition', it takes me to a page to download either trial versions of the Pro and ULT versions of Expression Studio and to a link for Expression Encoder that then leads back to the same link above that says'free version', but downloads a 'trial' versionas identified when I start to install it.There is a considerable difference between free versions of software and trial versions of Pro software. The free is usually a lesser featured version of a piece of software and a trial is usually a 30 day version of the Pro, or normal version, of a pieceof software that expires. But MS seems to be using the term interchangeablyand a link that says it is to download a free version of Expression Encoder 4 downloads an installer that says it is for trial version software. Can anyone tell me if there is actually aregular free version of this software and not a trick to download and install atrial version? Thanks, numetro. Not sure I find this really funny, but in case you're not kidding and are still confused (and for the sake of other readers that you might have confused):You go on this page:, there are three products showing at the top:1. Expression Studio 4 Ultimate - This is the Expression product suite. Full version of this suite includes Encoder 4 Pro.

Trial version includes only free version of Encoder.2. Expression Studio Web Professional - This is more or less what Expression Web was in the past. Either full version of trial version of this suite include only free version of Encoder.3. Expression Encoder Pro - This is Encoder Pro.

There is a free version and a paying 'Pro' version. No Trial available.EULA:Since this thread is turning silly, I'm locking it. Numetro,Just curious, besides the name of the downloaded executable (which is a mistake and has no meaning whatsoever), have you actually seen the word Trial for Expression Encoder anywhere else?Bottom line, there is no Trial version of any flavor of Encoder 4 available. We have a free version, which you pointed above, that will never time out (again please ignore the filename being extracted). We do not have a trial version availableof Encoder 4 Pro; we are prevented to provide a trial version by the codec license agreements. Finally, there is a Trial version of Expression Studio 4 Ultimate available, which does include Encoder. But because we don't have a trial version of Encoder 4 Pro available, it installs the free 'no-timeout' version of Encoder 4.

Hi Eric,Thanks for your reply. When I right-click the MS EE4 installer and select 'Run as administrator', or just double-click it, it gives a standard UAC installer message and identifies the app I am about to install. It says:'User Account Control - Do you want to alow the following program to make changes to your computer? - Program name: EncoderTrialen.exe'Clearly identifying this software as trial. Not hard to recognize.Your own description above seems to contradict itself. Bottom line, there is no Trial version of any flavor of Encoder 4 available.

Finally, there is a Trial version of Expression Studio 4 Ultimate available, which does include Encoder. But because we don't have a trial versionof Encoder 4 Pro available, it installs the free 'no-timeout' version of Encoder 4.' That's quite a bottom line. Those are your words. In a way contradicting yourself twice. One can only try to understand what Microsoft software download executables, or MS forum moderators, have to say.Thanks,numetro. It is like chicken or egg based on your own logic. I disagree, and I guess everyone else who do not like self-contradict would disagree too.

If you remove the false assumption that Microsoft cannot make mistake, then everything starts to make sense. As for alerts, I have no clue. Numetro,I didn't contradict myself: I'm talking about two very different products:Expression Encoder and Expression Studio. The latter is a suite of products, which some of them have trial versions (Blend and Web for instance), and thus is available in Trial (though, as I CLEARLY stated above, the TrialSuite comes with only the free Encoder). Could you please point me where I'm contradicting myself?I re-iterate: there is no Trial version of Expression Encoder.

Even though the name of the file being extracted has 'Trial' in the name on the free download of Encoder (which is a known issue that we'll try to correct on ournext iteration), none of the Encoder product website pages, its EULA, this forum, the Encoder blog pages, Encoder help files and most importantly the application itself mentions Trial or functionality that wouldtime out. Hi Eric,I noticed and understood the diffs between Expression Encoder 4, Expression Encoder 4 Pro, Expression Studio 4, Expression Studio Encoder 4, Expression Studio 4 Ultimate, Expression Studio 4 Professional, Expression Studio Web Professional, and Expression Encoder Studio Pro Ultimate Web Professional 4 Encoder Studio Pro, before I posted my question. I think. But I think you need one more variation for good measure.I'm not sure about how CLEAR all this is when you read it from the point of view of someone who didn't program the software itself.

Or how CLEARLY it is that you're describing this. You still refer to something here as the 'Trial' Suite. That is a bit ironic.I now see too, that my post has made it to the Expression Encoder Studio Pro Ultimate Web Professional 4 Encoder Studio Prohomepage.

I'm so proud of my boy. I'd like to thank my mother and father, but most of all my agent.I still haven't been alerted about why I'm not being alerted by the MS alert system. And who's EULA?Thanks, numetro.
